Big Gibraltar win in fight for FIFA membership

Gibraltar
won a major battle in its fight for FIFA membership when soccer’s governing body was ordered by sport’s highest tribunal on Monday to reconsider the British territory’s application that was rejected 20 months ago.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld the Gibraltar FA’s (GFA) appeal that FIFA had “improperly rejected” its initial bid in September 2014.
CAS also said it had told FIFA to submit the GFA’s application to its annual Congress which has the power to grant membership.
The tribunal added the Congress, which meets in Mexico City next week, “shall take all necessary measures to admit the Gibraltar Football Association as a full member of FIFA without delay”.
FIFA said in a statement that its council would discuss the issue early next week and decide on a response “including a potential request to amend the 66th FIFA Congress agenda in order to submit the Gibraltar FA’s application”.
Gibraltar became a member of UEFA in 2013 after a 14-year struggle during which it faced opposition from Spain.
The British territory was twice rebuffed by European soccer’s ruling body and took its case to CAS which ruled in its favour.
UEFA then said Gibraltar’s teams would be kept apart from Spain in any competition in which they took part.
Gibraltar’s national team made their competitive debut in the 2016 European Championship qualifying campaign. They lost all 10 matches, conceding 56 goals.
Overall, they have played 18 matches, including friendlies, managed one win against Liechtenstein, and have employed three coaches.
Angel Maria Villar, president of the Spanish football federation, refused to comment when approached by reporters at his hotel in Budapest where UEFA is holding its annual Congress on Tuesday. /news.com

Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal fan protests created a 'strange atmosphere' at the Emirates

The Frenchman played down Alexis Sanchez's reaction to being taken off in the 1-0 win over Norwich on Saturday
It was relief rather than triumph written on the face of Arsene Wenger as Arsenal all but secured the much-prized third place in the Premier League.
The scoreline was a throwback to a bygone era. The performance will not be remembered as a vintage one for a Wenger team.
But after a traumatic week with talk of protests and demonstrations,
victory was needed to quell the unrest. And thanks to an inspired substitution, the three points were Arsenal's.
Danny Welbeck was summoned from the bench in the 56th minute in place of Alex Iwobi. Initially, it was ammunition for the discontented among the Arsenal fans who jeered the decision. All forgotten on the hour as Hector Bellerin crossed, Olivier Giroud headed the ball down with precision and Welbeck – with the help of a deflection from Sebastien Bassong – drove home the winner.

At last Giroud made a positive contribution. The French striker had spent most of the game on his backside and making more protests than any Arsenal fan as he looked for free-kicks.
Not so happy at the end was Alexis Sanchez. With five minutes to go, Wenger wanted to protect the 1-0 lead which was earned the hard way against a resolute and energetic Norwich outfit whose instinct for survival served them well.

Russia defends intercept of US plane

Russia says it sent a fighter plane on Friday to intercept a US aircraft approaching its border over the Baltic Sea because the American plane had turned off its transponder, which is needed for identification.

The Pentagon said the US Air Force RC-135 plane had been flying a routine route in international airspace and that the Russian SU-27 fighter had intercepted it in an "unsafe and unprofessional" way.

CNN reported that the Russian jet had come within about 100 feet (30 metres) of the US plane and had performed a barrel roll.

"All flights of Russian planes are conducted in accordance with international regulations on the use of airspace," the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement.

"The US Air Force has two solutions: either not to fly near our borders or to turn the transponder on for identification."

Friday's incident underlines rising tensions between Russia and the United States over eastern Europe. NATO has said it plans its biggest build-up in the region since the Cold War to counter what it considers to be a more aggressive Russia.

The Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which joined NATO in 2004, have requested higher and permanent presence of the alliance, fearing a threat from Russia after it annexed the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

The Kremlin denies any intentions to attack the Baltic countries, but it has often said that they have become an aggressive "Russophobic kernel" pushing NATO towards a consistently anti-Russian course.

"We are already starting to get used to the insults of the Pentagon regarding alleged 'unprofessional' manoeuvres when our fighters intercept US spy planes at the Russian border," the defence ministry said in its statement.
